The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has received a new mandate from the European Commission to conduct a silica (nano) safety assessment covering four forms commonly used in cosmetic products:
Hydrated Silica (nano)
Pyrogenic Silica (nano)
Silica Silylate (nano)
Silica Dimethyl Silylate (nano)
This SCCS silica nano safety assessment will evaluate the potential health risks associated with these ingredients when used in cosmetics. The SCCS has been given 12 months to publish its scientific opinion, which will guide future regulatory actions and potential ingredient restrictions within the EU cosmetics framework.
For further information or regulatory support, please contact the gcrs group Team.
Silica (nano) refers to nanosized particles of silicon dioxide used in cosmetics to improve texture, absorb oil, or provide a matte finish.
The SCCS regularly evaluates nanomaterials used in cosmetics to ensure their safety for consumers. This new mandate aims to confirm whether various forms of silica (nano) remain safe under current usage conditions.
The SCCS is expected to release its opinion on the safety of silica (nano) within 12 months of the mandate, by October 2026.
Depending on the SCCS findings, brands may need to review formulations or update product notifications to ensure continued compliance with EU cosmetic safety regulations.
